Know what unique skills are in your Toolbox
Why can’t I have the skills… that person has? STOP that thinking – I call that ‘Toolbox Envy’.
You can’t be everything or have every tool in your TOOLBOX…..
AND…. have you really assessed your UNIQUE skills to give yourself credit for what you already offer in your toolbox?
Not just what you offer but what you UNIQUELY offer. There is a big difference!
You should know these unique skills to position yourself on your resume, or in an interview. Knowing them will also give you confidence to see yourself as the right person to handle a challenging assignment or project at work or apply for an internal job posting.
Think long, on the three best skills you offer to an employer.
Brag shamelessly…in a humble way 😊.
While certain skills could be common, I am going to confidently hypothesize that your unique COMBINATION of those 3 skills will be hard to replicate by someone else.
And I know where everyone is going to go initially. They will default to simple positioning of skills…..like (and for example only) ….I am great ‘problem solver’ or I am ‘creative’.
Sorry too many people present common or standard skills. They are great but not unique.
I am confident, the way YOU solve problems or show your creativity is definitely unique.
So, instead of just quickly saying you are a ‘great problem solver” - STOP and REFLECT on what kind of problem solver.
Are you an ‘intuitive and out of the box problem solver’?
If you said that to me in an interview – I would definitely want to hear more and remember you.
If you just said I am a great problem solver – I would likely gloss over your comment as standard interview response and not give it much weight.
And the benefit to all this consideration on your unique skills is that it will boost your confidence and make you envy your own well deserving “toolbox’.
Summary: Consider and define your combination of unique skills = Envy your own toolbox
