Do I need a Cover Letter?
Cover Letters to write or not to write…hmmmm? Does it help? Apparently, YES. I recently heard it could help boost on-line interview response rate by 2%.
And keep in mind the on-line response rate is already low - so take the lift!
So then… what KIND of cover letter should you write?
Should it be more “traditional” or should it be a bit more “impactful”. It depends on the industry & role.
Either way you need to stand out and keep it clear & concise, helping your audience make the links from your experience to their job posting or company goals.
So when you are staring at a blank page wondering how to start writing, consider this….
Simple 123 structure of an “Opening – Pitch – Close”
1) Create an Engaging Opening that makes them want to read on…..
2) Make a Clear Pitch - to showcase your relevant skills aligned to the company & role and,
3) Close strong - with a call to action & thanking for their time & consideration.
CHAT GPT can also help, but don’t blindly accept what it churns out. Edit the output to match you, your experience & your typical professional style.
TIP: Cut paste the “job posting” into chat GPT and ask it to draft a “Cover Letter” that highlights x,y,z skills (you choose based on job posting) and also draws on your “resume” background (paste your resume in as well).
See what CHAT GPT comes up with…then edit it.
Remember: Keep your cover letter simple, concise and easy to read. Put yourself in your audience’s position. Will they think it is engaging and want to THEN read your resume?
