Do you know your “value statement”
Are you valuable? ……Of Course!! but, do you know why a company should ‘hire’ or ‘promote’ you?
Can you articulate it in 2 lines? (AKA: your value statement)
Can you easily FINISH this line? ……….You should hire me because …..Or ….You should promote me because………
And before you answer that…….Do you know what the company is looking for? Do you know what goals, challenges or problems the company is trying to solve?
📝 Here’s 3 simply things to consider when building your Value Statement:
1️) What are your top 3 “brag” worthy skills
2️) What “style” do you bring to them that’s unique?
3️) Why would your unique skills help a company solve their challenges or address their goals?
Let’s build a value statement……I will go first…….(and use my corporate past as the example)
When I helped Coca-Cola Canada get into the milk business with ‘fairlife’ my compelling value statement would have been something like this….
“I am a curious & open-minded problem solver, that authentically builds internal & external stakeholder relationships to obtain relevant perspectives that drive value & collaboration towards a mutual goal.”
This was the right “value statement” at the time, given our business goal was to explore a challenging entry into the milk industry with entirely new stakeholders. (I had other skills, but the ones above were most relevant for the goal.)
So, whether you are new to your career or have years under your belt, you should always know your simple and timely ‘value statement'.
P.S. Knowing your professional value will also help build confidence and keep imposter syndrome in check.
So, take a crack at writing at writing your compelling value statement.
It’s time to ‘strategically’ brag.
