Words Matter - pump yourself up…not down

Confidence in the workplace can ‘ebb & flow’.

Purposefully choosing positive or powerful words or phrases can help you exude more confidence?

It takes consistent practice!  I did it throughout my corporate career and saw first-hand how it helped shape perceptions, while also supporting my self-assurance.

Top Tips for Building Yourself Up

  1. Choose Written Words Wisely:   When you proofread your work, look for & replace weak or uncertain phrases with strong & decisive ones. (You will get faster at these edits over time!)

  2. Use Positive Language:    As an example, it could be as simple as saying “what’s happening?” vs (what so many people do say) “what’s wrong?”😊

  3. Speak with Conviction & Brevity:     Being respectfully direct, clear & concise is helpful to your audience.  You can lose your point (and people) with too much detail.  Follow up with more details --- if they ask.

  4. Watch your Body Language:    Stand straight, shoulders back, eye contact, use hands/arms to emphasize key points (but not excessive).  You know this!

  5. Here is the tough one ……Employ Active Listening:     Communication is a two-way street.  Be genuinely interested in others, listen & respond thoughtfully. (Like you truly did listen 😊)

I am sure you have heard this before, but my question is…. “Are you consistently doing it?”
