Put your ask up front!
Don't bury the lead!
Put your ask up front. Even when it feels uncomfortable.
Frequently I see people struggle to get to the point and clearly ask for what they need.
They give the background and preamble before they eventually get to the ask!
Don’t do this!!
Time is a precious commodity, so clear and concise communication is key.
When you reach out to someone, whether it's a colleague, a client, or a connection, ensure your request is front and center.
Why? Because it:
Saves Time: Your audience knows what you want immediately, so they can respond faster.
Shows Respect: Being upfront respects their time and priorities. (They are busy!)
Frames the communication: If they know what you are asking for, they can read the rest of the communication and know how to take in the background you are providing.
Builds Relationships: Honest and straightforward communication fosters trust.
Supports Success: Your audience has other competing priorities. Clarity helps ensure engagement and focus.
In summary:
Ask First – Details Second. Don't make your audience work to figure out your intentions.
