Your career journey is not a straight road!

The Career Journey – is rarely a straight road.  So how do you navigate the curves and valleys.  I don’t know for certain…...but..….I do know or at least feel extremely confident in saying …..

It is best done with a growth mindset and nurturing resilience.

I did not get the job I wanted out of university.  I graduated from University of Western Ontario’s business school (now IVEY) and I went to work at a job I know was just a starting point.

Not to worry…..

I knew where I wanted to get to and then made the best of my current job to learn the most I could and then chip away at getting skills that would be desirable for where I wanted to go.

I applied this thinking throughout my career and ended up with my final corporate accomplishment doing something pretty darn special and unique and being in the place I had envisioned long ago.

That place had less to do about my title (although not going to lie I was happy to be a Director at Coca-Cola) but more about….

1) Doing interesting work

2) With people I enjoyed and admired

3) Getting respect and recognition for my efforts

And if I could summarize the mindset of what got me to where I wanted to be, I would say 3 basic things….

1) Remain Curious, work hard & embrace challenges
2) Allow yourself to feel Empowered
3) Be Inclusive & enjoy the engagement with the people around you - every step of the way

And finally….

4) Be resilient, keep plugging away – while being kind and gracious to yourself.

Happy to hear any additions.
