Leadership lessons from Steve Kerr - Coach & NBA Basketball star

Basketball anyone?  Steve Kerr fans? Leadership lessons come from many places.  And you don’t have to be an executive to call yourself “a leader”.

I recently listened to a podcast with STEVE KERR head coach of the Golden State Warriors/former multi-year NBA Champion - I absolutely loved what he had to say & wanted to share it.

Here are a few of his messages:

1) “Embody the cultural values you want your team to have” – I agree practice what you preach.

2) “In a new role, don’t disrespect your predecessor” – As they say, if you can’t say something nice don’t say anything.

3) “Set specific goals & make them visible” – Agree, don’t assume people remember – keep goals front & center.

4) “Build confidence in your team by prioritizing mindset” – Really loved this one – remind people of what they do that is great when they get off course with their confidence.

5) “Communicate a larger story for your team” - Big yes to this – the power of story is real. Don’t you like a good story?

6) “Knowing your weaknesses is a strength” – I talk about this one (all the time) in my “branding” discussions with clients – know what can undermine you & what you need help with – people want to help – don’t be afraid to share where you need help.

7) “NO substitute for good preparation” – Absolutely!!! – take the time to prep – I overcame fear of presenting with this being a key part of the solution (worked at it over time)

There were a few more so you can find the full podcast on “How Leaders Lead” – search ‘Steve Kerr’

It’s about a 12 mins listen. Well worth it. The podcast format is very quick & digestible.

….and speaking of Coaching – reach out if you need a “Career Coach”.  I am happy to offer a free ½ hour consult. (with no pressure – not my style)
